Stephen Dodd likes Ireland even more now than he did before.

Britain's Stephen Dodd recorded his third European Tour success and his first of the season when he took the European Golf Open by two strokes on Sunday.

Welshman Dodd, 39, birdied two of the last three holes to shoot a two-under-par 70 in high winds at the K Club, totalling nine-under 279. It was his third European Tour success.

He finished ahead of overnight leader Jose Manuel Lara of Spain and another Briton, Anthony Wall.

"I am thinking about taking out Irish citizenship," he said. "Patience was the key today. I just tried to stay patient, keep the ball in play and take my chances when they came along."

Third-round leader Anthony Wall (73) and Jose Manuel Lara (74) tied for second at the K Club.

Ireland's Paul McGinley boosted his Ryder Cup hopes with three birdies in the last four holes to shoot a 69 and finish a further stroke back alongside Lee Westwood who is also showing signs of a return to form - Simon Khan, Graeme Storm and India's Jeev Milkha Singh.

McGinley was in 91st when he finished the second round and so certain that he missed the cut that he went to the airport in Dublin . He made the trip back to the course after hearing he'd made the cut and shot a 5-under 67 in the third round to get himself into contention.

"I played the best two rounds over the weekend tee-to-green that I've played for a long, long time," McGinley said. "That gives me more pleasure than any kind of finish because I feel I can play the shots again."
