Padraig Harrington has been awarded this year's Golf Writers Trophy, becoming just the fourth Irishman in history to win the accolade. Having won the Open at Carnoustie in July, Harrington received over 75 per cent of the votes, beating the European Tour Order of Merit winner Justin Rose to the award. Third place was given jointly to Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren after the pair won Golf's World Cup for Scotland .
Harrington becomes the first Irishman to win the award for thirty years; the first since Chrsity O'Connor in 1977. The two other Irishmen to win the award were Joe Carr in 1953 and Harry Bradshaw in 1958.
Harrington's Open victory was one of the more surprising in recent years, given that the thirty-six year old went into the final day six strokes behind the leader. However, the Irishman managed to beat the Spaniard in a four hole play off.
