Scotland have gained their first victory in the World Cup of Golf, defeating America in a playoff. Marc Warren and Colin Montgomerie defeated Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley in the third playoff hole to give Scotland the victory. The event was held at Mission Hills Golf Club, with Boo Weekley missing the vital putt after Montgomerie had made par.
Scotland and America finished at 25 under par in regulation, with France one shot behind at 24 under and Englands pairing of Justin Rose and Ian Poulter finishing on 23 under. America could have won had Slocum holed his 7 foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole, whilst both teams came close to securing birdies on the second hole though Weekley and Warren just missed. Last years tournament in Barbados had seen Scotland defeated by Germany in the first play-off hole.
Despite the prestige suggested by the title of the tournament, the World Cup has decline in significance in recent years, with Weekley, the World Number 43, able to invite his friend Heath Slocum to partner him after 13 Americans had declined to participate.
