Dubai to Host World's Most Lucrative Golf Tournament

Dubai is to host the world’s most lucrative golf tournament as of 2009. The Dubai World Championship will be held at the Jumeirah Golf Estates between November 19th and 22nd, though organisers are yet to decide whether to use the Fire or Earth course . The tournament to take place once a year for five years, with an option extend that period for a further five years.

Prize money will total $10 million (£5 million), whilst the winner will receive $1.66 million (£800,000). The tournament thereby overtakes the US Tour’s Players Championship as the richest event, which offers total prize money of $9 million.

Under the new system, The Order of Merit is to be renamed The Race to Dubai, with prize money of $2 million (£1 million) for the overall season winner.
