The Smurfit Kappa Group has ended its sponsorship of the European Open golf tournament with immediate effect. Smurfit Kappa chief executive Gary McGann said the decision is based on the increasingly international scale of our business and the inability of a band such as ours to obtain full value from the sponsorship.
The news has caused doubts to be raised over whether the event can continue to be hosted at the K Club, as it has been since 1995. Organisers have confirmed the dates as 3rd-6th July, but are yet to announce a venue for next years event.
Colin Montgomerie was the victor at the last European Open, though only three of his Ryder Cup teammates were there to congratulate him, highlighting the reduced prestige of the event over recent years, as each year fewer of the worlds top golfers have participated.
