Phil Mickelson has lamented the Olympic committees decision to leave out golf for the 2012 games in London. Following the removal of baseball and softball from the 2012 games, golf had requested to be included, as had karate, roller sports, squash and rugby. Squash and karate had been selected to fill the two slots, though both failed to gain the two-thirds majority required to get onto the roster.
Mickelson acknowledged that 2016 would now be the earliest possible date for golf to be included in the Olympics, though believes it would be of great benefit both to the Olympics and to golf. Mickelson added that he feels it would make for a more exciting Olympic sport if it was only open to amateurs, as the professionals have a wide range of illustrious tournaments in which they can compete already.
Should golf be included in the Olympics, the format would involve two-person amateur teams playing two rounds in the hope of qualifying for a match-play tree. Those who qualified would then battle it out for the medals.
