Gary Player has suffered another blow in his attempt to host a charity golf tournament despite the Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund withdrawing their support. The controversial event, scheduled to take place at the Arabella Country Estate, Western Cape, from November 23rd, has seen its two main sponsors, Cola Cola and SuperSport, as well as one of the event organisers, Octagon, withdraw their support and sponsorship of the event, citing the controversy surrounding the tournament as the reason for their withdrawal.
Previously, the Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund, the main beneficiary of the event, had asked Mr Player to step aside from the event due to his involvement in building a golf course in military ruled Burma. However, Mr Player refused to step aside, causing the fund to withdraw their support for the event.
The tournament has previously been extremely successful, raising around £1.5 million for the charity.
