The UBS Hong Kong Open golf tournament enjoyed fantastic conditions as record crowds of 31,000 witnessed a fantastic finish, demonstrating the increasing popularity of the sport in Hong Kong. Wonderful sunshine and respectful crowds provided the backdrop for Miguel Angel Jimenezs tight victory, as he pipped Robert Karlsson, Thongchai Jaidee and K. J. Choi to victory.
The Spaniard also won the tournament three years ago, though this event was markedly different to that of 2004 given the vast crowds and excellent atmosphere. The players were full of admiration for the tournament, enthusing both about the local setting and the golf course, which Jimenez reportedly described as having a beautiful design.
The sport has swelled in popularity in recent years in Asia, with the success of golfers such as Choi and the increasing talent emanating from the continent involving more and more of the Asian population in the sport.
