Ernie Els has moved top of the European Tour Order of Merit with his seventh HSBC World Matchplay title victory.
It is no surprise that Els is so successful at the event, given that he helped redesign the West Course on which the tournament is played, but the victory and the £1m prize money that goes with it will be pleasing all the same. Els recorded a 6 and 4 victory over Angel Cabrera with four holes left to play, having got off to a flying start with eight birdies leaving him three ahead after the first eighteen holes.
Cabrera came out fighting after lunch, birdying each of the fourth, fifth and sixth holes, though found it hard to make inroads into the South Africans lead as Els also birdied two of the same holes. Having birdied the ninth, Cabrera was two down at the turn, though Cabreras putting let him down as Els won four of the next five holes to secure victory at the 14th hole. Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose second and third respectively on the Order of Merit have the chance to leadfrog Els in the coming tournaments, with the 37 year old not due to compete in any of the seasons three remaining tournaments.
