Gary Player has had his invitation to host a Nelson Mandela charity fundraising tournament in South Africa withdrawn due to concerns over his links with Burma .
The 71 year olds company has designed more than 250 golf courses across the world, including the controversial Pride of Myanmar at which Burmas military rulers are known to play. Pressure had been building for the invitation to be withdrawn, with Desmond Tutu at the forefront of calls to boycott Players company. Previously, calls to boycott Players company had been ignored, with a spokeswoman for Mr Mandela claiming the former president wouldnt "follow a line simply because its taken by other Nobel peace prize laureates".
However, the Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund has since performed a u-turn, insisting it wasnt "fully aware of the extent and nature" of Players involvement with Burma, "nor of the political impact of this involvement". Gary Player has defended his ties with Burma, claiming his companys involvement in the country was "taken entirely out of context" as it began five years ago at a time when the military regime seemed to be relenting.
