The discovery of a colony of rare bats has delayed a £100 million development at a Jack Nicklaus designed golf resort . The St Mellion Golf and Country Club in Cornwall used to attract some of the best golfers in the world for the Benson and Hedges tournament, though the course has fallen out of favour in recent seasons. The new golf resort will include a new hotel complex as developers aim to restore the course to championship level.
The brown long-eared bats are a rare breed, and as such, no work may take place that may harm the bats. With the bats currently hibernating until February or March, developers may face a long wait, but are trying a variety of methods in the meantime. Bat boxes are being installed around the old buildings in a bid to lure the bats to safety, though a special bats dormitory may have to be built if that doesnt work.
