The LPGA Tour have introduced new rules requiring leading women golfers to speak English as of 2009. Tour organisers are adamant that the new rules are not designed to be punitive, but instead are intended to improve the tours relationship with fans and sponsors. The majority of LPGA Tour players do speak English, though with South Korea providing 45 of the 121 women golfers on the American tour, there may be some golfers who are more affected by the rules than others.
For those players who dont meet the requirements, the tour has revealed it will not eject them from the tour, but instead provide them with the necessary resources to improve. South Korean members of the LPGA were told at a recent meeting at the Safeway Classic that they must pass an oral English test from 2009, with those who fail set to be provided with resources such as tutoring.
The idea has received backing from a leading Korean golfer, Pak Se-Ri. She said, We agree we should speak some English. When you win, you should give your speech in English. Mostly what comes out is nerves. It is a totally different language in front of camera, youre excited are not thinking in English.
