Luke Donald has been ruled out of the Ryder Cup following surgery on his left wrist. The news comes as a blow to Europe, with Donald almost certain to be selected as a wildcard given that he has only ever lost once in his seven Ryder Cup matches. With the top five placed European players in the world rankings guaranteed to be selected for the event, Donald was only eighth, but with a number of other wildcard candidates already set to qualify through the European earnings list, the 30 year old looked certain to be one of captain Nick Faldo’s two wildcard picks.
Donald, who hasn’t played since the final round of the US Open in June, spoke of his disappointment at the timing of the injury . He said, ‘While there is never a good time for an injury, the timing of this injury was especially disappointing for me considering it forced me to miss the Open and it comes in a Ryder Cup year. But taking proper care of it is my highest priority and I’m encouraged by Dr Andrew Weiland’s experience with this type of injury and his outlook towards my recovery and rehabilitation’.
