Azinger Announces Change in Format for Golf's Ryder Cup

Thu, 07 Feb 2008

US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger has announced that there is to be a change in the format in September’s competition . The illustrious tournament, which pits Europe’s finest golfers against America's in a team format, is to be held at the Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky between September 19th and 21st.

For the last eight years, the tournament has had a round of four-balls in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon. However, this year will see a reversal of that, with morning foursomes matches to be followed by afternoon four-ball matches on the first two days of play.

The news will be welcomed by America’s golfers who have struggled to compete with the team spirit of their European rivals in recent years. Since 1999, when the new system was last used, Europeans have dominated the event, particularly in the last two years.
