Number of American Golfers in Decline

Tue, 26 Feb 2008

The number of Americans playing golf has fallen since 2000, according to new figures from the National Golf Foundation and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. Since the turn of the millennium, the number of American golfers has fallen by 13 per cent, from 30 million to an estimated 26 million.

Of further concern is the fall in the number of keen golfers, with the number of people playing golf 25 times a year or more down by a third from 6.9 million in 2000 to 4.6 million in 2005. The decrease is being attributed to a lack of time, with the four hour average to complete a round of golf perhaps proving too long for some.

Golfing bodies across America are coming up with strategies as they attempt to halt the trend of decline. Shorter courses have been suggested as one option, whilst other schemes include attempting to attract more young and female golfers.
