World number five Ernie Els has announced he is to compete in fewer tournaments this year as he focuses on the major events. The South African hasn’t won a major since 2002, but is renowned for his global participation in events, notably events such as Dubai . However, given the five year absence of a major trophy, and his relative dip in form following knee surgery, the three time major champion has decided to restrict his participation in events for the coming season.
Els has stated that his main career aim is to complete a career grand slam by winning all four majors at least once. Having won two US Opens and an Open Championship, The Masters and the PGA Championship have hitherto evaded Els, though with fewer events to compete in this year, the fans favourite will be hoping for more success in the major events.
