Ryo Ishikawa has today announced that he has turned professional, at the age of just 16. The Japanese sensation has become the youngest ever pro in the history of Japanese golf, beating the record set by Kiyoshi Yamaura who was eight months older than Ishikawa when he turned pro in 1978.
Ishikawa has been touted for great success after his victory at the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup last May. Aged just 15 at the time, the then amateur became the youngest ever winner on the Japanese men's tour. Since then, Ishikawa has played in seven domestic events, with his best performance coming at the Fuji Sankei Classic where he finished joint fifteenth.
The 'Shy Prince' won't be able to focus solely on his professional golf career just yet, however, as he is still at school. Ishikawa is already a hugely popular figure amongst Japanese golf fans, as illustrated by the crowds that followed him at November's Dunlop Phoenix tournament - a tournament which saw defending champion and British Open winner Padraig Harrington go about his business with relative anonymity.
