A new links golf course is to be build on the waterfront of Irvine Bay, significantly altering the face of North Ayrshires seaside towns. The £60 million development will not only see the new Ayrshire golf course built on the coast, but also a hotel and a number of holiday homes . The project is a joint venture between property development company Credential Holdings Limited and KPT Limited, who have both agreed a deal with the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company (IBRC). IBRC will, however, appoint another partner to assist in the development of Irvine Harbourside.
It is hoped that the development will boost the areas economy, creating a considerable number of jobs and increasing tourism revenue. At present, the area attracts an estimated 300,000 visitors each year, though it is hoped that the new development will encourage more Europeans and Americans to make the journey. Such a boost is especially important given that the area has seen a 35 per cent decrease in the number of manufacturing jobs in the past five years, causing 40 per cent of industrial land to be unused.
The 18 hole links course has been designed by David McLay Kidd, whose other previous projects include St Andrews Castle course, Oregons Bandon Dunes and the Machrihanish Dunes .
