New research from the University of Alabama in Birmingham has revealed that an estimated 1,000 Americans are injured in accidents involving golf carts every month. The study claims to be the first of its kind and shows that accidents involving accidents happen not only on the golf course, but also on nearby roads in cases where the carts are being used instead of a normal road vehicle .
The study looked at a national database of emergency room records stretching from 2002 to 2005. An estimated 48,000 injuries were sustained as a result of golf cart accidents in that time, with the most common way of sustaining an injury as a result of golf cart crash is by being flung from the side, either because of a collision or the cart rolling over. Roughly half of the injuries were sustained on golf courses, with the remainder on streets, homes and other public property .
Those involved in accidents were most likely to suffer fractures or head trauma, with 10 to 19 year old boys and men above the age of 80 the most likely to suffer such an accident.
