The International Management Group has announced that Golf's World Match Play Championship will no longer be held at Wentworth as of next year. The event is set to undergo a revamp with a new location and a new sponsor, in what will be the first time since the first tournament in 1964 that it isnt held at Wentworth. With Volvo the new sponsors for the 2009 Championship, the event is to be held at the Finca Cortesin club near Marbella in Spain under a round robin format.
This years Volvo Masters in Valderrama will be the last time the event is staged before being replaced by the Dubai World Championship, leaving Volvo free to focus on the revamped Match Play tournament. Prior to confirmation of Volvos sponsorship, the tournament had been in doubt after previous sponsors HSBC pulled out last year.
The new format of the Championship will see the field of 16 split into four groups of four for the first two days, with each of the group winners progressing to a 36 hole semi-final. The event is set to have a prize fund of £2.5 million.
