San Jose Invests in Nets to Stop Golf Ball Damage

Fri, 06 Jun 2008

The City of San Jose is to spend $2.2 million on fencing off golf courses to limit the damage caused by stray golf balls . The past six years has seen the city pay out over $22,000 on nearly 50 claims from residents who live near to the public golf course, though the city has now decided to invest heavily in stopping the problem rather than face a continuous flow of claims.

Nets began going up late last week, and are to be erected around the entire perimeter of the course. Although the cost of putting up the nets is excessive compared to the payouts faced so far, City Attorney Richard Doyle revealed that the possibility of a resident getting killed by being struck on the head by a golf ball has encouraged them to act.

San Jose currently faces a $22.3 million deficit, a situation which is unlikely to change in the next few years. Consequently, the latest investment in the golf industry has angered some local residents, unhappy at the lack of money being spent elsewhere. The course cost $22.6 million to build six years ago, and another $20 million is owed despite declining use of the course.
