Golfers Benefit From Woods Effect

Tue, 04 Mar 2008

Whilst many observers have lamented Tiger Woods’ domination of the world of golf in recent years, it’s unlikely that his fellow professionals will bare too great a grudge given the extra revenue he has brought to the sport . Having earned $123 million last year from his on- and off-course activities, Woods is set to easily surpass $1 billion in career earnings in the next few years.

The increase in golfers’ earnings is signified by the number of golfers who topped $1 million in tournament earnings in a season last year. Whilst Curtis Strange became the first golfer to reach this milestone in 1988, last year saw a record 99 players surpass the figure.

However, although it is Woods who has been at the top of the Golf Rich List every year, his fellow professionals have benefitted with a significant rise in earnings, boosted particularly by off-course activities. Last year saw Phil Mickelson finish second in the rich list with earnings of $50 million, Vijay Singh was third with $32 million and Ernie Els also increased his earnings on the previous year with $30 million.
