Whilst many observers have lamented Tiger Woods domination of the world of golf in recent years, its unlikely that his fellow professionals will bare too great a grudge given the extra revenue he has brought to the sport . Having earned $123 million last year from his on- and off-course activities, Woods is set to easily surpass $1 billion in career earnings in the next few years.
The increase in golfers earnings is signified by the number of golfers who topped $1 million in tournament earnings in a season last year. Whilst Curtis Strange became the first golfer to reach this milestone in 1988, last year saw a record 99 players surpass the figure.
However, although it is Woods who has been at the top of the Golf Rich List every year, his fellow professionals have benefitted with a significant rise in earnings, boosted particularly by off-course activities. Last year saw Phil Mickelson finish second in the rich list with earnings of $50 million, Vijay Singh was third with $32 million and Ernie Els also increased his earnings on the previous year with $30 million.
