Stuart Appleby is confident he can do well in this week's lucrative Players Championship, despite recent knee surgery. Having finished 14th equal at the Masters, Appleby underwent surgery to cure a damaged meniscus in his right knee which he sustained a couple of weeks prior to the Masters. Although his ability to hit the ball wasn't impaired, according to Appleby, his flexibility was limited with movements such as bending and squatting painful for the Australian .
Appleby made a disappointing return from surgery at an event in Charlotte last week, where he missed the cut, though he doesn't believe the surgery influenced his performance. The impending Players' Championship is one of the most lucrative competitions of the year, with a purse of $9.5 million for the event at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida .
With Tiger Woods absent for the event, Appleby is confident he can succeed, though he will face stiff competition from his compatriots. World Number 3 Adam Scott is a leading contender for the title, though with thirteen other Australians in the field as well as defending champion Phil Mickelson, it will be a tightly fought competition.
