A Dubai sovereign wealth fund has bought the Turnberry golf resort for £55 million. The Ayrshire based golf course is the venue for next years Open Championship, the fourth time it has hosted the event, including Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watsons famous Duel in the Sun in 1977. Turnberry has an array of golfing facilities, with two 18 hole Championship courses the Ailsa and the Kintyre as well as the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy and a nine hole course.
The course was previously owned by Starwood, one of the biggest hotel and leisure businesses in the world, but has now been bought by Leisurecorp, a subsidiary of the Dubai World fund. Once completed by the end of October, it will become Leisurecorps first golf deal in the UK, though they have previously acquired golf courses in Dubai and South Africa . The company have declared their intention to redevelop Turnberrys 219 room hotel prior to next years Open.
Leisurecorp have attracted media attention recently following the establishment of their partnership with the European Tour which will see the traditional European Tour Order of Merit replaced with the Race to Dubai this November.
