Open Championship Profits to Help Develop Golf in China

Thu, 08 May 2008

A portion of the Open Championship profits are to be used to help develop golf in China, it has been revealed. The Royal and Ancient Club are to use £100,000 of the profits to support the HSBC China Junior Golf Programme, according to Duncan Weir, the director of golf development for the Royal and Ancient Club. Weir reportedly commented that developing the game in China is one of their major priorities.

The HSBC China Junior Golf Programme has been running since last May, offering seven tournaments and two summer camps, which has seen thousands of children become involved in the programme. Over the course of 2008, however, the programme is to be taken into schools, exposing the sport to a far greater number of children, with an estimated 70,000 boys and girls set to be introduced to golf.
