A single government body has spent more than £12,000 on golf balls in the past three years, it has been revealed. The UK and Trade Investment government body, which answers to Lord Mandelsons Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, has shelled out the cash on specially branded golf balls. Humfrey Malins, MP for Woking, Surrey, discovered a ball marked UKTI when playing a round at his local golf course .
Mr Malins labelled the expenditure as a complete waste of taxpayers money. He added, To think that the Government has been spending over £4,000 a year on golf balls is quite ridiculous. I'm not sure if Lord Mandelson is a golfer himself but I would like a personal assurance from him that the Government is going to halt this extraordinary spending.
In total UKTI have spent £12,030.50 in the last three years on golf balls, though UKTI defended the outlay. A UKTI spokesperson said: UKTI branded golf balls have been used as premium level promotional items for use at specific events, predominantly overseas in the USA, Canada, Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia .
The spokesperson added that the balls are used as corporate gifts for business leaders at events such as the PGA Merchandising Show in the US. It was clarified that there are no plans to buy any more.
