Controversial proposals for a new 18 hole golf course in Loch Lomond have been given the go ahead. The exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club had caused some consternation with their request to build a second golf course near Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond. Conservationist group Woodland Trust Scotland opposed the plans on the grounds that the development would destroy ancient woodland habitat, claiming the National Park planning committee has a duty to protect the area. Woodland Trust’s Christina Byrne said, ‘We are very disappointed. It is a great natural habitat on the banks of Loch Lomond and it's very disappointing that it's going to be gobbled up by more of the golf course’.
However, their fears were not shared by the planning committee, who have approved the proposals. The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority said it had demanded certain redesigns in order to fit the golf course into the sensitive area. They have pointed out that the approval is subject to numerous conditions, and their assessment of the request has been conducted with help from Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Golf Environment Group, Sepa and Forestry Commission Scotland .
