Trump Gains Approval for GBP1 Billion Golf Resort

Tue, 04 Nov 2008

Donald Trump has finally been granted approval for his £1 billion Aberdeenshire golf resort proposals after a two year battle with environmentalists. Having been rejected by an Aberdeenshire Council committee, the plans were called in by the Scottish Government and have now been approved by Finance Secretary John Swinney. Mr Swinney has ordered that no more than 500 private homes be built, and the outline planning permission he has granted is also dependent on the Trump Organisation ensuring that the sand dunes and wildlife on the Menie estate are properly protected.

Mr Trump was evidently delighted by the news, declaring, ‘We are greatly honoured by the positive decision and believe that the people of Scotland will be extremely happy with the final product. It will be a tremendous asset and source of pride for both Aberdeenshire and Scotland for many generations. I would like to personally thank the thousands of people and organisations who have supported us throughout this process. As I have often said, because of the quality of the land we are given to work with, we will build the greatest golf course in the world’.

Despite the conditions imposed by Mr Swinney, environmentalists have voiced their anger and disappointment at the news. Groups such as RSPB Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) opposed the plan as they sought to protect the sensitive sand dunes, whilst Rob Ashlin of the Sustainable Aberdeenshire group labelled the news as ‘very disappointing’.
