European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo has announced his wild card picks for next month’s tournament, with Ian Poulter the surprise selection. Faldo’s other wild card was Paul Casey, meaning that his 12 man team doesn’t include Darren Clarke or Colin Montgomerie . Faldo’s decision has provoked opposition from some quarters, angered that Darren Clarke has been excluded, despite winning a tournament just a week ago, when Ian Poulter will play having prioritised his US tour career over his efforts to qualify for the Ryder Cup.
Indeed, Poulter’s form has been shaky of late, with just one top ten finish since January, though Casey represents a much less controversial selection. The surprise at Poulter’s inclusion is demonstrated by a poll of 32 European Tour players at Gleneagles this week – just one of whom said he would include Poulter as one of his wild cards.
Whilst Montgomerie’s record in the Ryder Cup is hugely impressive, having never lost a singles match in his eight appearances, it is Clarke who many had hoped would secure a wildcard. Having slumped to 258th in the world following the death of his wife, he has recovered to a top 60 ranking and was the inspiration of the 2006 winning team.
