Colin Montgomerie has backed Sandy Lyle to captain the European 2010 Ryder Cup team. Montgomerie has ruled himself out of the running for the role, claiming that Lyle deserves the chance to captain the side. Lyle is the only one of the big five European major champions not to have captained a Ryder Cup side, with Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam and Nick Faldo all having served as captains. Montgomerie, who was left out of this years European Ryder Cup team, said, It would be a shame if Sandy doesn't get the chance. I think it would be only fitting if he does the job at Celtic Manor, as his four major colleagues have all done it.
On Lyles possible rivals for the role, Montgomerie said, There is no other outstanding candidate at this time. I don't think (Jose Maria) Olazabal wants it and the others are not ready yet. However, Montgomerie did suggest that it doesnt take Einstein to work out who the next three Ryder Cup captains could be, suggesting Olazabal will follow Lyle before he captains the team himself in 2014.
The captain will be chosen by the Ryder Cup committee during January next year.
