United States Claim Victory in Golfs Ryder Cup

Tue, 23 Sep 2008

The United States had brought an end to Europe’s nine year grip on the Ryder Cup with a 16½ - 11½ victory at Valhalla. America dominated throughout the tournament, taking a first day lead of 5½ - 2½ as Europe’s big names failed to perform and struggled to get to grip with the greens. Europe entered the final day 9-7 down, but failed to build on a slight recovery that saw the score stand at 10-9 to America. The final day saw Europe continue their disappointing start, whilst the anticipated comeback never arrived from the likes of Sergio Garcia, who failed to rediscover his usually impressive Ryder Cup form.

Ian Poulter – one of Nick Faldo’s much maligned wildcard picks, was one of the few bright points for Europe. Whilst the typically reliable Harrington and Garcia struggled, Poulter claimed four points out of five. Meanwhile, the Americans had a number of new faces in their side, with captain Paul Azinger’s controversial four wildcard selections doing him proud. He said, ‘I’ve put my heart and soul into this for the last two years, and my team have done the same this week, I could not be happier.
