A leading American surgeon has warned that Tiger Woods may not return to his best form until 2010. Woods underwent surgery on his left knee following his win at the US Open in June, and Dr Lanny L Johnson is urging Woods to be patient in his bid to surpass Jack Nicklauss record of 18 majors. Woods has ruled himself out of action for the rest of 2008, but had suggested he could play at the Masters in April.
Dr Johnson said, Other forces, will try and hurry Tiger back, but he should take it easy. Dr Tom Rosenburg, who did the operation, is a great surgeon and, if Tiger's smart, he will listen to what he has to say. Dr Rosenburg will want him to have the best possible recovery time. The tendon has none of the biological functions necessary for its new role and, as such, needs time to reinvent itself. There are new blood vessels to get established, new nerves and new cells. If you tear your cruciate ligament in American football, you can play within a year and with full confidence within two years. It is based on this and the recovery period of other athletes that I am guessing that Tiger will need two years.
