Angela Standford has won the season opening SBS Open tournament in Hawaii, denying 19 year old Michelle Wie victory on her first start as an LPGA member. The duo were tied for the overnight lead going into the final day at Kahukus Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club, though Stanford had slipped to three shots behind with just eight holes remaining. However, with world number eight Stanford sinking three consecutive birdies and scoring par on the last three holes, Wies double bogey at the 11th hole proved costly.
31 year old Stanford said, I didn't think she was going to make a mistake. She played really smart for about 10 holes. She does a lot of things right and she's going to be around for a long time. Stanford pinpointed her 24-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole as the turning point, saying, I needed to see a ball go in so that was huge because I was starting to wonder if I was going to make another birdie. Then I started to get back to what I am trying to do with the ball, just hitting the shot in front of me.
Meanwhile, Wie lamented, It's disappointing. It's not what I wanted but, at the same time, I had a good week. I will take a lot of positive thoughts from this.
