Asia Win Golfs Royal Trophy for First Time

Tue, 13 Jan 2009

Asia have won the Royal Trophy for the first time after beating Europe 10-6 at the Amata Spring Country Club . Victory seemed inevitable for Naomichi Ozaki’s team, who took a 6½ - 1½ lead into the final day. With Asia needing just two points from the final day to secure victory, Toru Taniguchi demolished European golfer Niclas Fasth 7&6 to take victory for his side.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal, a late replacement for Seve Ballesteros, paid tribute to his team’s absent captain, as the Spaniard continues to recover from brain surgery . Olazabal said, ‘My last words are for Seve. He is recovering from some health issues, but even though I'm the captain this year, I might not be the captain next year, and I can assure you he is going to be tougher than I was.’

Olazabal also affirmed his determination to captain Europe’s Ryder Cup team in the future. He said, ‘There are things we will all keep in mind if I become captain of the Ryder Cup. It's up to the players to say how good a captain I was. I'll talk to them and see how I can improve.’
