Colin Montgomerie appears to have ruled himself into contention to be Europes next Ryder Cup captain, having previously dismissed speculation linking him with the job. Indeed, the Scot previously gave his backing to compatriot Sandy Lyle, 1985 British Open and 1988 US Masters Champion.
Having fired a 5 under par second round of 67 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, the 45 year old said, I will let you know if the job has been offered to me or not on Wednesday. At this stage, I know as much as anyone. I would love to help the European cause in any way, shape or form. I would have loved to help the European cause in 2008, but I wasn't given the opportunity.
The eight times European number one missed out on a wildcard for last year's match in Kentucky, ending his run of eight successive Ryder Cup campaigns. Europes golfers lost on that occasion, but will be looking to recover the trophy at Newports Celtic Manor golf resort .
The European Tours tournament committee had been set to announce its decision during the Abu Dhabi event but is now expected to appoint a captain at a meeting in Dubai on January 28th.
