HSBC Weighing Up Role as Golf Tournament Sponsor

Tue, 10 Mar 2009

Global bank HSBC is reportedly weighing up whether to continue its sponsorship of golf tournaments following a 70 per cent fall in annual net profit. HSBC were the sponsors for the Women’s Champions event in Singapore at the weekend, paying $2 million for the privilege. That deal is now over, as is its deal with the Womens World Matchplay Championships, though it continues to sponsor the Champions tournament in China for men. LPGA Deputy Commissioner Libba Galloway voiced her eagerness for HSBC to remain in the sport .

Head of sponsorship for HSBC, Giles Morgan, said, ‘What we do with any sponsorship, particularly when it has come to the end of its contractual term, is sit down and work out against our own objectives whether it has been able to do what we wanted it to do. We have to go through a lot of numbers and data. We need to look at the figures for the TV coverage, look at the number of people who came and evaluate the media coverage too. What I can say is that in two years for a tournament to have pricked the imagination of the people in Singapore and in Asia generally in the way it has is an enormous success.’
